Meet Margaret
Margaret is Doris’s longtime friend—the kind of friend who knows when to listen, when to speak up, and when Doris might need a gentle nudge. Warm, observant, and never overbearing, Margaret understands Doris’s fierce need for independence while quietly reminding her that accepting help and leaning on the people who love you doesn’t mean giving any of it up.
Meet Biscuit
Biscuit is Doris’s faithful older beagle and her constant companion. He doesn’t offer advice or ask difficult questions—he simply stays close, somehow knowing when Doris needs a nudge toward the door, a reason to smile, or just a warm presence beside her. Through all the changes of her first year without Harold, Biscuit is a comforting reminder that sometimes the quietest companionship can mean the most.

Meet Marcus
Marcus is Doris’s twenty-six-year-old neighbor, but their connection goes much deeper than living across the street. Harold became an important figure in Marcus’s life after he lost his father, and now Marcus quietly looks out for Doris—not because she needs rescuing, but because that’s what friends and neighbors do. Patient, dependable, and good-humored, Marcus helps Doris discover that accepting a hand now and then doesn’t mean surrendering her independence.

Meet Evelyn
Evelyn Carter is the warm, energetic director of the local senior center—and someone who sees possibility where Doris initially sees uncertainty. Colorful, confident, and wonderfully welcoming, Evelyn never treats growing older as a reason to step back from life. Through her friendship and gentle encouragement, she helps Doris discover a community where she can participate on her own terms, make new connections, and realize that belonging doesn’t have an age limit.
